Atlantic City was granted federal money Thursday that will allow the Fire Department to put a breathing station at its yard on the Black Horse Pike.

The $133,200 was part of about $9.8 million in grants announced Thursday, including money that will help hire and retain firefighters in Bayonne and Patterson.

The city is waiting on a much larger grant that will pay salaries for several firefighters, including 13 currently in the academy. The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, or SAFER, grant the city is currently using runs out in May.

“We don’t expect to hear from that until closer to when that grant expires,” said Fire Chief Dennis Brooks.

The city also is awaiting a grant for about $120,000 that will pay for 20 self-contained breathing apparatus masks, or SCBAs.
