ATLANTIC CITY - The Christmas season is officially underway in Atlantic City, where citywide decorations were lit Sunday afternoon with the help of Miss Atlantic City and the new mayor-elect.
Tiana Cannon, wearing her crown, waved her wand as the crowd counted down to the lighting of the large "Season's Greetings" sign at Center City Park on Atlantic Avenue. She was joined by Mayor-elect Don Guardian, Main Street Atlantic City Executive Director Pamela Fields and invited friends and family, such as Jailyn, Jordyn and Jurnee Jones, 13, 9 and 5, respectively, of Atlantic City, joining their mother, Jaime.
The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority's Special Improvement Division began the holiday decorating as early as October, using displays purchased last year for $595,000.
After the lighting at Center City Park, the group traveled by jitney to the "Let It Snow" sign at the foot of the Atlantic City Expressway - moved this year from its former location at Missouri Avenue, where a new Bass Pro Shops store will be constructed - and O'Donnell Park, where lights will be choreographed to music. They also lit the largest tree at Bartram Avenue.
In addition, Atlantic Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard are lined with decorative candy canes, shooting stars and holiday banners.
