An Atlantic City man was arrested with a loaded gun after the car he was driving in was stopped for reckless driving Wednesday evening, police said.

Officers Anthony Abrams and James Karins stopped the car at Haddon and Caspian avenues after seeing it speeding through the area and going through red lights, Sgt. Monica McMenamin said.

Abrams noticed passenger Christopher Weldon, 26, appeared very nervous and seemed to be hiding an object in his waistband, according to the report. Karins asked Weldon to show his hands, and when Weldon hesitated, Abrams and Karins drew their weapons and demanded he leave the vehicle.

When the car door opened a loaded .25-caliber silver handgun fell to the ground. The officers called for backup and two more occupants were removed from the vehicle.

The driver, Jorge Candelaria, was charged with motor vehicle violations and released.

Weldon was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Information on his previous conviction was not immediately available.

Weldon was placed in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on $100,000 bail.
