An Atlantic City man was sentenced to 16.5 years in prison Thursday for admitting to killing another man in a vacant building.

Luis Lopez, 45, pleaded guilty last month to aggravated manslaughter for fatally stabbing Craig Giatto, 42, of Atlantic City, at the Boardwalk Apartments — formerly known as the Sunnyside Motel — on the 1700 block of Arctic Avenue in September 2011, a statement from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said.

An autopsy showed the stab wound pierced Giatto's heart. Authorities said the two men were arguing over living at the abandoned building, which has since been razed by the city.

Superior Court Judge Bernard E. DeLury sentenced Lopez to the middle of the 15 to 18 years he faced in prison. He must serve 85 percent — or about 14 years — before he is eligible for parole.
