Atlantic City native Mark Buzby, a rear admiral and commander of Military Sealift Command, is retiring from the U.S. Navy after more than 30 years in the service.

Buzby’s family owned the historic Dennis Hotel, now part of Bally's, for more than 100 years, and his brother, David, still lives in Linwood.

He followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Navy after graduating from the Merchant Marine Academy.

Buzby, who lives in Arlington, Va., took command of the Military Sealift Command in 2009. The command provides ocean transportation for the Department of Defense and is responsible for more than 110 noncombatant ships that support military and humanitarian missions.

Control of the command will pass to Rear Adm. T.K. Shannon during a ceremony aboard USNS Spearhead in Norfolk, Va., on Friday.

Buzby was one of the grand marshals of the 2012 Atlantic City Salutes America's Armed Forces Parade preceding the Atlantic City Airshow.
