An Atlantic City police sergeant was injured during an arrest Friday morning when he and an armed robbery suspect went through a motel’s front window.

Police received a call from Resorts security just before 8 a.m. saying there had been a robbery and the suspect fled to the Burgundy Motel on North Carolina Avenue, Sgt. Monica McMenamin said.

Police found the suspect, later identified as Rafique McNichols, and a struggle followed, according to the report.

Sgt. Richard Halvorson and the suspect went through the window during the struggle.

The victims, two men ages 21 and 23 from North Jersey, said they were pistol-whipped and cash was taken during the robbery, McMenamin said. The gun was not recovered.

The robbery is being investigated by the Division of Gaming Enforcement because it happened in a bathroom on the casino floor.

Halvorson was treated for cuts to his right hand.

McNichols, 31, was also treated for injuries from the glass. He appears to be homeless. He was charged with robbery and resisting arrest.
