Atlantic County Sheriff Frank X. Balles is expected to formally announce his campaign for state Senate in the 2nd Legislative District at a Pleasantville restaurant Monday.

Republicans announced the event in an email Thursday, saying the event will be held at at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at Gary's Restaurant, 831 N. New Road.

Balles, 50, filed initial paperwork with the state Election Law Enforcement Commission in December indicating a run in the 2nd District, which covers most of Atlantic County. He told The Press of Atlantic City last month he was contemplating running and that he would have to give up his current seat if elected.

News of Balles' plan for Monday’s announcement was first reported Thursday on Harry Hurley's “Hurley in the Morning” radio show.

He remained the only Republican to file the initial paperwork on Thursday, although he refused to confirm he was running. He acknowledged it was unlikely Republicans were hosting the event for him to announce he wasn’t running.

State Sen. Jim Whelan, D-Atlantic, 64, is the only Democratic candidate to have filed to run for Senate.
