Barnegat Township officials say they are looking forward to work starting at a 110-acre site designated as a redevelopment zone once a buyer is identified at an auction next week.

The parcel of land adjacent to the Garden State Parkway on West Bay Avenue is one of the last tracts in the township zoned for residential development.

The property was most recently owned by Shoreline Sand and Gravel, which filed for bankruptcy a year and a half ago. On Sept. 24, the property will be auctioned off by Sheldon Good & Co. through a U.S. Bankruptcy Court bank-directed sale at the federal courthouse in Trenton, a news release states.

Bidding will start at a minimum of $600,000, the release states.

The township will not be bidding on the property, Administrator Dave Breeden said Monday. A portion of the property is zoned residential, and another area is zoned commercial, Breeden said.

“The township designated this as a suitable area for redevelopment, and at this point we’re going to wait to see who the successful bidder will be,” he said.

Evelyn Weiss Francisco, spokesman for the Walters Group, said Monday that the development firm also will not be bidding on the property. The Walters Group developed a large portion of a residential subdivision in Barnegat and neighboring Stafford townships.

The site will need a considerable amount of remediation and cleanup, following several outstanding violations from the state Department of Environmental Protection and Pinelands Commission, Breeden said. The process is expected to be time-consuming.

“We feel we have a fair amount of residential property already, and we would love to see something commercial come here that is suitable for the area,” he said.
