CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE _ Authorities are investigating Sunday’s death of an inmate at the Cape May County Correctional Center.

John Anthony McElroy, 45, of Lower Township, was found to be in “medical distress” and unresponsive on Sunday in the common area of the center, known as the “day room.”

McElroy, who had been jailed here since Aug. 15 on a contempt charge out of Lower Township, was pronounced dead a short time later at the Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House, according to the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office.

The death is under investigation by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit. County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor said the medical examiner is investigating the cause of death.
