Barnegat Township Police patrol officers are now carrying the heroin antidote Narcan.

Sgt. Jason Carroll trained the last officers this morning on how to administer the drug, Lt. Keith Germain.

The department has six Narcan kits for officers and one is also kept at the high school, Germain said.

Police officers were trained in February to carry the drug after Ocean County Prosecutor issued a directive to all Ocean County police departments. The move is an attempt to stem the increasing number of heroin overdose deaths in the county with 17 so far this year.
