A bicyclist and a vehicle driven by a Vineland police officer collided Thursday night, according to police.

Around 9:45 p.m., Officer J. Selby was driving a police vehicle west on East Landis Avenue, approaching Howard Street when bicyclist Jeffrey Peyton, 46, of Vineland rode in front of the vehicle.

Peyton saw Selbly’s vehicle and tried to avoid it but ended up turning the bike directly toward the vehicle.

Selby hit the brakes and swerved to avoid hitting Peyton head-on. He said he side-swiped the bike with the passenger side of the vehicle. Peyton and a witness said that Peyton crashed into the vehicle.

Selby was uninjured. Peyton had minor injuries and was transported to South Jersey Regional Healthcare Center.

He was issued summonses for failure to keep right, no lamps or reflectors on a bicycle, and no audible signal on a bicycle.

Peyton told police that he had been drinking since 4 p.m.
