Martin Scorsese took home the first Emmy for HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" - about Prohibition-era Atlantic City - during the awards ceremony Sunday night in Los Angeles.

The series - based on Superior Court Judge Nelson Johnson's Book "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City" - stars Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson, a character based on real-life Atlantic County political boss Enoch "Nucky" Johnson.

Buscemi was up for best actor in a drama series but lost to "Friday Night Lights" star Kyle Chandler.
