The body of a 29-year-old woman was discovered Thursday in the Cardiff section of Egg Harbor Township, authorities said.

Amber Swigert, 29, was found after a motorist called 9-1-1 stating he observed a body at the side of the road near the intersection of Fork Road and the Black Horse Pike.

A wooded stretch of Fork Road was closed Thursday morning as township police and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office investigated the scene. Investigators were searching the edge of the woods, sweeping the area with metal detectors.

Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain said an autopsy is pending.

If the death is ruled a homicide, this would be the 29th homicide in Atlantic County this year, one less than the 30 that occurred in 2006, which saw the most since at least 1985. It would also be the first in Egg Harbor Township this year.

The scene is within a mile of Davenport Elementary School and the Atlantic County Training Center for Special Needs Children.

Fork Road has been the site of several incidents in recent years.

It was the location of an incident this May in which a 21-year-old man stabbed himself and fled from police. He was later found in the woods, dead from his wounds.

In 2008, police reported that a couple who were trying to buy marijuana were driven to the woods off Fork Road, robbed and forced to strip naked at gunpoint.

According to the state Department of Corrections, Swigert was incarcerated for nearly four months this year on charges of aggravated assault, criminal trespass and theft. She was released on November 23.

She had previously served five months in 2011 stemming from a charge of distributing a controlled dangerous substance.
