A Cape May Court House man allegedly stabbed his own friend with a box cutter early Saturday morning after they got into an argument, Middle Township Police said Monday.

Police arrested Leo Collins, 51, for allegedly assaulting Duane Mathis, 50, as the two walked home around 12:30 a.m. on March 9 in the area of Route 9 and Shellbay Avenue.

Police were called to the area and found Mathis bleeding from several wounds. Collins was not at the scene, but Mathis said it was him before being transported to Cape Regional Medical Center.

Mathis said they got into an argument and physical confrontation, at which point Collins allegedly pulled out the box cutter and sliced Mathis on his back, leg and hand. The cutter was found at the scene.

Police found and arrested Collins an hour later a short distance from the incident, charging him with aggravated assault and three different counts of unlawful possession of a weapon. He was taken to Cape May County Correctional Center with bail set at $100,000.

The case is being investigated by the Middle Township Police Major Crime Unit and the Cape May County Prosecutors Office.
