A Cape May Court House man died late Tuesday when his car collided with the back of a tanker truck and exploded into flames on the Atlantic City Expressway, police said Wednesday.

Jonathan Schifferdecker, 22, was driving east on the expressway at about 11:30 p.m. when his Chevrolet Malibu slammed into the truck, which was stopped near milepost 30 in Winslow Township, according to police.

Schifferdecker was trapped in the vehicle as it became engulfed in fire, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Schifferdecker graduated from Wildwood Catholic High School in 2008. He was a senior at Temple University in Philadelphia, according to his obituary.

At Temple, Schifferdecker was a senior writer for the sketch comedy television show Temple SMASH and captain of the school’s improv team, the obituary states. His goal was to write for television.

In 2009, Schifferdecker went to Uganda to work with orphans and maintained many friendships in Africa, the obituary states.

State Police were already in the area investigating another accident when the collision occurred, spokesman Sgt. Brian Polite said. Lanes were closed on both the east and west side of the expressway, causing traffic to back up for several hours.
