A car was impounded Monday evening in Longport after drug-making equipment was found in the passenger's side of the vehicle.

Lt. Frank Culmone said Tuesday the driver, 35-year-old Michael Halter, of Dennis Township, was initially arrested for drunken driving.

Items included chemicals and residuals for methamphetamine (crystal meth) production, Culmone said. There were large chemical bottles and glassware as well as equipment with tubing coming out of paper bags in the passenger's side of the vehicle.

Authorities from several agencies investigated the car that was impounded and took it to a temporary structure on Atlantic Avenue next to the fire station, Mayor Nick Russo said Monday night.

Halter has been released on summonses at this time, and the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office is continuing the investigation into the items found, Culmone said.
