Cumberland County Democrats are apparently urging William Whelan to resign as county freeholder director because of a series of criminal and non-criminal incidents linked to his home.

One of those incidents involves what authorities said was the arrest of a teenager for allegedly sexually assaulting a youth under the age of six at Whelan’s home in the Rosenhayn section of Upper Deerfield Township last month.

The other involves what state Department of Children and Families officials said was an illegal day care operation run by Whelan’s wife, Carole, at the house. No charges or penalties were imposed because it seems that Carole Whelan was not familiar with state regulations regarding the operation of child-care facilities, they said.

Cumberland County Democratic leader Bob Balicki said the incidents make up a “serious matter that needs investigation.”

“I have expressed to him that the party would support his decision to step down so that he can concentrate on these issues,” Balicki said. “While it is not my place to tell Mr. Whelan what to do for his family, I believe the residents of Cumberland County need to be assured that our elected officials are focused on pursuing the agenda we set forth.”

Whelan could not be reached for comment.
