Two mosquito pools from the Union Lake Wildlife Management Area in Millville tested positive for the Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus, according to the Cumberland County Health Dept.

The EEE virus is not as common as West Nile virus, but it is one of the most severe mosquito-transmitted diseases in the county, the health dept. said in a release.

Only 5 to 10 cases are reported in the United States every year. Most people that contract the virus suffer significant brain damage, and about one-third of those with the virus are killed by it.

“The County Mosquito Control Division will be spraying the area this week to cut back on the number of adult mosquitoes that carry the risk of transmitting EEE virus to humans or animals such as horses,” the release said. The area to be sprayed is limited to the wildlife area in Union Lake, with no residential homes needing to be sprayed at this time.”

Health officials warned visitors to be careful around wet, wooded places like the Union Lake Wildlife Management Area.

The health dept. also recommended that residents use mosquito repellent, and wear pants and long sleeve shirts when outdoors.

Residents may contact Megan Sheppard at the Cumberland County Health Department at: (856) 327-7602 or Heather Lomberk at the Cumberland County Mosquito Control Division at: (856) 453-2170 with questions or concerns.
