The Dave Matthews Band will give $50,000 to help the AtlantiCare Foundation establish community gardens throughout Atlantic City.

The Healthy Garden Network initiative seeks to improve access to fresh produce for people living in the resort —  which lacks a supermarket — by establishing six such gardens, AtlantiCare said Monday in announcing the donation, which matches the hospital network’s financial commitment.

The band learned about the program through former AtlantiCare CEO George Lynn, who helped organize the three-day Dave Matthews Band Caravan as chairman of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber’s Advocacy Committee, said Rene Bunting, the hospital network’s vice president of marketing.

Work on the Hope Community Garden — the program’s first — started two weeks ago near the Shore Park apartment high-rise on Mediterranean Avenue. Ultimately, the program should produce another five gardens, each near a public-housing development.
