little egg fatal

Emergency workers at the scene of a fatal accident Sunday on North Green Street near Frog Pond Road in Little Egg Harbor Township.

An 81-year-old Toms River man died Sunday after the car of a mother tending to her toddler crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with another vehicle.

The man’s wife suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, in Atlantic City as a result of the crash that occurred about 3:15 p.m. on North Green Street in Little Egg Harbor Township.

The mother and her young son traveling in the second car were injured, said Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

The names of the victim and those injured were not released as of Sunday evening pending notification of family members, Little Egg police Chief Richard Buzby said.

Traffic was detoured from the area for the afternoon as helicopters were brought in to airlift two of the victims to Atlantic City.

The married couple was traveling south on North Green Street near Frog Pond Road in a 2000 Honda Accord driven by the woman. A 28-year-old Little Egg Harbor woman was driving north on North Green in a 2005 Honda Civic when she crossed into the southbound lane, officials said.

“The driver of the Civic was looking into the back seat attending to her child,” Della Fave said.

The child, a 2-year-old boy, was restrained in an infant car seat but was injured. He was taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center. His mother suffered leg and head injuries and was airlifted to AtlantiCare’s City Campus.

Blood samples were collected from the driver of the Civic. She exhibited no signs of impairment immediately after the crash, Della Fave said.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Little Egg Harbor Township Police Department are investigating the accident.
