A downed pole outside Kensington Square on westbound Tilton Road has shut down a portion of the road.

According to Atlantic County officials, Tilton Road is closed in both directions between Fire Road in Egg Harbor Township and Route 9 in Northfield.

Motorists are advised to avoid this area

A subcontractor working on the city's drainage project was backing up a loader truck that snagged the wires of a telephone pole, which passes across Tilton Road, snapping the pole near the base, said Northfield police Chief Robert James.

"The only thing holding the pole up are the electrical wires," he said pointing to the electrical wires running alongside Tilton Road.

Atlantic City Electric is on site, but the pole belongs to Verizon, so they are waiting for that company to arrive, James said.

He estimated the road would be shut down through the evening.
