An Egg Harbor City man already in federal custody on murder charges has been charged with a fatal 2010 shooting in Galloway Township.

Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain authorized murder and weapons charges Thursday against Rafael Olmo, 28, in the murder of Leandro A. Rodriguez, 36, of Hackensack, Bergen County.

On the afternoon of Dec. 2, 2010, police responded to a report of dead body in the backyard of an unoccupied residence on the 500 block of South Berlin Avenue in Galloway.

The body, later identified as Rodriguez, had been shot twice in the face, police said.

The Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit and Galloway police conducted the homicide investigation that resulted in Olmo being charged.

Olmo was already in federal custody for his alleged role in the 2010 murder-for-hire of Deanna Downs, a 29-year-old mother from Egg Harbor City. He was indicted on murder and conspiracy charges in that case in September 2011.

He also was charged with weapons offenses in connection with the 2009 killing of Sandy Thomas, 30, of Galloway Township, who died after he and his cousin were shot during a party there. The cousin, Shawn Travis, 24, was wounded.

Olmo now faces additional charges of murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon by a convicted person.
