LITTLE EGG HARBOR -An Egg Harbor City police detective suffered burns and a severe laceration on his head after he was involved in an accident on the Garden State Parkway this morning.

Steven Hadley, 31, of Port Republic, was driving north near mile marker 57.1 at 8:51 a.m. when his grey pick-up truck drove off the roadway and hit a tree, said Sgt. Adam Grossman of the New Jersey State Police.

A fire then started in the vehicle as Hadley escaped, Grossman said.

He was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Campus for his injuries, Grossman said, adding he was conscious and alert at the scene.

Egg Harbor City Mayor Lisa Jiampetti said Hadley has since been transported to the Burn Center at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and is listed in critical but stable condition.

The news of the accident shook many in the city today, and Jiampetti said they are sending their best wishes to his family.

"We're happy he's alive and doing well," she said. "We have to keep praying for him."

The highway was closed for about 30 minutes for the helicopter to arrive. Fire companies from West Tuckerton, New Gretna and the New Jersey Forest Fire Service extinguished the blaze, Grossman said.
