Egg Harbor Township police are continuing to investigate an accident that left an off-duty Atlantic City police detective seriously injured Sunday.

Michael Braxton, 27, a six-year department veteran, was riding his motorcycle east on the Black Horse Pike with other riders when he had to maneuver out of the way of a 1994 Honda Del Sol when the driver changed lanes, forcing him off the road, police said.

Braxton was thrown from the bike and struck a street sign.

The driver, Meghan Cardo, 20, of Egg Harbor Township, stopped at the scene. Several fellow officers who were riding with Braxton aided him at the scene, along with AtlantiCare paramedics and members of the township's Ambulance Squad.

Braxton underwent surgery on his leg at the AtlantiCare Regional Trauma Unit in Atlantic City. Police would not comment on details of his injury.

"We're just thankful for the professionalism and dedication of Egg Harbor Township and those on duty, as well as the off-duty officers who rendered assistance," Public Safety Director Will Glass said.

Atlantic City Police Chief Ernest Jubilee said the city would not be commenting, leaving that to the township, which is investigating the crash, spokeswoman Sgt. Monica McMenamin said.

Atlantic City police filled the hospital after hearing of Braxton's injury.

"He's well-respected, and everyone came to show their support for him," McMenamin said.

"It is a most unfortunate accident," Mayor Lorenzo Langford said Monday. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Detective Braxton and his family."

The crash happened about 4:45 p.m. in the area of West Plaza Place in the township's West Atlantic City section.

Egg Harbor Township Police Sgt. Albert Maiorano is leading the investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call police at 609-927-5200.
