An Egg Harbor Township police officer was injured in a crash Monday involving an 17-year-old unlicensed driver.

K-9 Officer William Reed, 35, of EHT, was driving west on Mill Road at about 8:12 p.m. when his patrol car struck a 2006 Lexus SUV operated by a 17-year-old male from Egg Harbor Township. Police said the Lexus, which was proceeding north on Fernwood Avenue, failed to yield at the stop sign.

The Lexus driver was charged with careless driving, failure to observe a stop sign and for being an unlicensed driver.

Police Sgt. Stephen Slusarski said the driver was on a supervised permit that required a licensed adult be with him at all times.

Reed was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, for his injuries. He remained at the hospital Tuesday for further evaluation, police said. His K-9 partner, Santino, was checked at the scene and secured by the Police Department. Santino was not injured in the crash, Slusarski said.

The Lexus driver and passenger, also a 17-year-old male, were taken to Shore Medical Center for moderate injuries.
