ESTELL MANOR — An 18-year-old man from the Sweetwater section of Mullica Township was killed in a single-car crash early Tuesday morning near Estell Manor Park.

Police said Johnny McGinty was in a 1999 Subaru Forester that crashed into trees along Route 50 and may have also hit a utility pole.

State Police responded just before 5:30 a.m. to the scene on northbound Route 50 at milepost 15.5. A passing traveler noticed the vehicle. It is not confirmed whether the accident had just occurred or if it had just become light enough for the accident to be seen, State Police spokesman Lt. Stephen Jones said.

Police said there were no signs of drugs or alcohol but McGinty was not wearing a seat belt.

Travis Zaydel, 22, of Mays Landing, said in an email Tuesday that McGinty was a good friend.

“I've been friends with Johnny for about a year. He is the type of guy you can always count on in any situation. His humor made anyone laugh. He was really good at fixing cars no matter how serious the problem was. He had a major heart and was always there for his friends and family,” Zaydel said.

The last Facebook post on McGinty’s profile shows a time stamp of about 1:50 a.m. Tuesday.

Jeffrey Hughes, 19, of Mays Landing, said he had been out of touch with the McGintys, but had known Johnny and his sister while attending Oakcrest High School. He added that the area where McGinty was found Tuesday is a dangerous curve that he remembers well.

“I bet I know exactly where it happened, it’s a pretty common place. It’s a pretty sharp turn if you’re not careful. I’ve almost gotten into accidents on it,” Hughes said.

Members of McGinty’s family declined to speak to The Press on Tuesday.

Troopers investigating the accident had the roadway shut down until 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Traffic was rerouted near the area of the accident from Route 50 onto 11th Avenue for about four miles.
