Former Absecon Mayor Peter Elco was appointed to the board of the South Jersey Transportation Authority on Wednesday.

A mayor of 24 years and a councilman for eight, Elco replaces Louis Toscano, who resigned last month.

Toscano was previously an aide to former Atlantic City Mayor James Whelan.

Elco taught at Holy Spirit High School in Absecon from 1973 to 2005 and worked for the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority from 2005 to 2011.

He has three adult children, three grandchildren and lives with his wife in Absecon.
