EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — A Port Republic man died Wednesday afternoon following a four-vehicle accident on West Jersey Avenue in Cardiff, township police said.

Richard Bourguignon, 57, was driving a pickup truck on West Jersey when he collided with an SUV driven by Igor Ilijoski, 36, of Brigantine, who had disregarded a stop sign while driving south on Fernwood Avenue, police said. Ilijoski’s vehicle also collided with an SUV driven by Helga Horn, of Mays Landing.

Bourguignon’s pickup came to rest in the yard of a corner property. He was treated at the scene for serious injuries and transported to the Regional Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where he died.

The crash caused Ilijoski’s vehicle to overturn in the intersection. One passenger from Ilijoski’s vehicle was flown to AtlantiCare's Trauma Unit by Medivac 5.

Horn’s SUV was severely damaged and also came to rest in the intersection, where it was struck by a car driven by Elaine Eastlack, 86, of Mays Landing.

Eastlack’s vehicle, which also ended up in the intersection, was severely damaged.

AtlantiCare paramedics treated victims at the scene. Ambulances from Egg Harbor Township, the Atlantic City International Airport, Absecon and Galloway Township responded. The Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company assisted.

As of Wednesday night, Horn was in stable condition and Eastlack was released from the hospital. Conditions of Ilijoski and his passenger were not available.

The crash is being investigated by Egg Harbor Township police.

Several serious accidents have occurred during the past decade at West Jersey and Fernwood avenues.

A 60 year-old Ventnor woman was killed in a two-car accident in February 2009, Press archives show. Six children were injured in September 2003 after their school bus — heading west on West Jersey Avenue — attempted to make a left turn onto Fernwood Avenue and collided with a car.

Emergency personnel have been involved in more minor incidents.

An Egg Harbor Township police officer caused a minor outage in April 2005 when he swerved to avoid a driver upon entering the intersection and hit a utility pole. In March, an Egg Harbor Township ambulance driver was cited with careless driving after he attempted to cross West Jersey Avenue on Fernwood, striking a pickup truck.
