About a dozen homes in Galloway Township were briefly evacuated when a resident accidentally damaged a gas line when he removed a tree Friday morning.

Galloway police said police, firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the 700 block of Gull Wing Court at 10:46 a.m. The gas line was damaged when the resident tried to uproot a large tree, police said. Between 10 and 15 homes were evacuated as a precaution and no injuries were reported, police said.

South Jersey Gas responded to the scene and it was repaired by 12:30 p.m.

SJ Gas spokesman Dan Lockwood said all the gas lines are working properly in the area. He advises al residents before conducting any digging on their property to first dial 811 to ensure they don’t damage any underground lines.
