MAYS LANDING — A casino worker accused of fatally striking a man crossing the street in a wheelchair last summer, then heading to work pleaded not guilty Tuesday.

Leo Strazzeri, 42, of Galloway Township, was indicted last month on a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. His attorney has said Strazzeri was not driving the car that day.

Daniel Tavarez, 45, was crossing Absecon Boulevard from his High Gate apartment in Atlantic City at bout 9:30 p.m. July 9 when he was struck. The car that hit him fled the scene and was later found unoccupied.

Strazzeri —- the car's owner — was found at the Revel, where he is a dealer, and taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus for blood and urine tests. Ten days later, he was arrested.

Defense attorney Steven Scheffler told the judge Tuesday that he sent a letter to Assistant Prosecutor Seth Levy for the state's evidence in the case.

"Most importantly, we need the video footage," Scheffler said, saying there are indications the incident was caught on a camera.

"We're going to get it out right away, judge," Levy told Superior Court Judge Michael Donio.

The next court date will be April 16.

Strazzeri has been free on bail since July 20, a day after his arrest.
