GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - A 23-year-old township resident was arrested Saturday after a brief foot chase, police said.

Police said officers received information that a man, later identified as Zhavai Sheppard, had a firearm with him in the area of the Shoppes of Galloway.

Officer Gary Brenner approached the suspect and police said Sheppard then fled on foot. Brenner and Officer Weigle pursued Sheppard and eventually took him into custody.

Police said a .40-caliber handgun was found in a stairway where Zhavai had fled from police at the Federal Court complex.

Sheppard was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of $150,000 bail. He is charged with possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and obstruction.
