The Atlantic County Utilities Authority is partnering with several agencies to help clean up one of the gateways to the shore before Memorial Day.
State Department of Transportation crews have been cleaning Route 30 between Absecon and Atlantic City this past week, and today the Absecon group Your Choice the People's Choice will join the ACUA in cleaning the south side of the highway.
"These groups make a huge contribution in helping to keep Atlantic County clean and green, especially at such a critical time as the summer season for our area's economy," ACUA President Rick Dovey said in a statement. "ACUA really wants to encourage other businesses and volunteer organizations to do the same. Many people don't realize the negative consequences of litter, both on wildlife and even home values."
The ACUA's Atlantic County Clean Communities program encourages volunteer groups to adopt county roadways for a minimum of four cleanups a year, the ACUA said. Almost half of all county roads are currently adopted, including Wellington Avenue in Ventnor, adopted by the Ventnor Tourism Association.
Route 30 is the first state highway to be included in the program, ACUA spokeswoman Monica Coffey said.
Volunteers will be meeting at 10 a.m. today at the ACUA's wastewater treatment facility and wind farm in Atlantic City and clean Route 30 from milemarker 55 to milemarker 56 eastbound.
In another cleanup supported by the ACUA, Linwood is holding its annual Patcong Creek Cleanup on Sunday.
Any group interested in adopting a portion of either Route 30 or Route 40 or a county roadway can contact Rebecca Turygan at 609-272-6950.
