A news conference to announce a gun buyback in Atlantic County has been canceled.

The "Guns for Cash" event will still be held later this month, but a formal announcement set for Thursday that was to include state Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa and acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain at the Prosecutor's Office in Mays Landing has been canceled due to the weather.

Instead, a news release will give details of the dates and places for the event. There will be two venues -- both churches -- with one in Atlantic City and one in Pleasantville.

This is the first gun buyback in the county since November 2010. This one will be paid for by Attorney General's Office through forfeiture funds. The office has held three other buybacks since December, with a fourth planned for Thursday and Friday in Monmouth County.

More than 5,300 guns have been collected from the previous three buybacks. The last one in Atlantic County resulted in 511 weapons turned in, including 257 handguns and four assault rifles.

People can turn in as many as three weapons without question, and receive as much as $250 each.

Anyone with questions about the program can call the Attorney General’s Citizen Services Unit at 609-984-5828 or visit www.nj.gov/guns, which currently has information about the Monmouth County event.
