Employees and shoppers stood outside the mall following the evacuation.

By about 2:30 p.m., police said Macy’s, JCPenney and Sears had reopened.

The rest of the mall remained closed.

About 4 p.m., police gave more details, saying responders found smoke coming from a mechanical room not accessible to the public. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and contained it to the room, police said. Investigation indicated it was an electrical fire, police said.

The Laureldale, Mays Landing and Cardiff fire companies, Mays Landing Rescue Squad and Atlantic City Electric responded.
