HAMILTON TOWNSHIP — A pedestrian was struck after a driver swerved to avoid another vehicle Thursday.

Police said Caesar Niglio Jr., 70, of Northfield, was westbound on Route 40 when he struck a woman on the shoulder of the road after swerving to avoid a car that stopped suddenly in front of him.

Iyana Davis, 39, of Mays Landing, was waiting to cross the road when she was hit. Niglio's car struck Davis then crashed into a bus shelter, police said.

Davis was flown to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, in Atlantic City with nonlife-threatening injuries, police said. Niglio was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus, in Galloway Township.

Traffic was rerouted for an hour while the scene was investigated, police said.

The accident is under investigation and charges are pending, police said.
