Firefighters battle a blaze Sunday at a home in Avalon.

Two people safely escaped from a house fire on Ocean Drive in Avalon Sunday afternoon.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a significant working structure fire at a home located on the 5000 block of Ocean Drive, according to a statement from the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire appears to have started on the first floor on the south side of the home before quickly spreading upstairs. The home saw significant fire, smoke and water damage. The cause remains under investigation,officials said.

One volunteer firefighter was treated for suspected heat exhaustion. The names of the people who escaped from the home were not released as of Sunday night.

The Avalon fire department was assisted by fire departments from Stone Harbor and Middle Township. Rescue squads from Avalon, Stone Harbor, Middle Township and Upper Township also responded.
