Local radio host Harry Hurley was warned in 2008 not to start a charity golf tournament in a recession.

But with the help of the local community, the Hurley in the Morning Golf Open, which will be held June 21 at the Mays Landing Golf and Country Club, has raised more than $300,000 for several local charities, and Hurley is optimistic about another strong showing this year.

The event includes a golf outing, silent auction, and breakfast and lunch at the club. It is open to golfers and nongolfers alike.

"More people participate by not golfing than by golfing," Hurley said.

Last year, the event raised almost $80,000. Hurley said every year the event raises more money than the previous year.

"We've been very fortunate," he said. "We just do our best. We work hard, and every year the community comes out and supports us."

The event will be broadcast live on Hurley's daily morning show from 6 to 10 a.m. on WPG Talk Radio 1450.

The silent auction will include a pool table, video arcade machines, autographed biographies by celebrities including Laura Bush and Michael Vick, hotel rooms at Revel and Congress Hall, Monet rocking chairs and sports memorabilia, including signed jerseys by former Philadelphia 76ers Allen Iverson and Chris Webber.

People can donate cash or sponsor a hole for $250.

The proceeds from the event will benefit dozens of local charities, Hurley said. The top three beneficiaries will be the Ensign John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers, and the Shore Medical Center Health Foundation and FACES 4 Autism, he said.

Smaller grants will be awarded to other local groups, including Atlantic Prevention Resources, Atlantic Cape Community College nursing program foundation, Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation, Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority Foundation, Northfield Education Association, local high schools, Atlantic County Toys for Kids, Atlantic County Crimestoppers, Literacy Volunteers Association and others to be named later, he said.
