Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized for the Atlantic City police officer killed Monday in a Florida car crash.
Michael Wamsher, 34, of Egg Harbor Township, died in a one-car crash in Tampa at about 2:40 a.m. His friend Jason Pittaro, 32, a U.S. Coast Guard flight mechanic stationed in Atlantic City, suffered minor injuries.
Friends and family continued to post words of love and loss both on The Press of Atlantic City’s website and a Facebook page set up in Wamsher’s honor. More than 200 people had joined the Facebook page by Tuesday evening. A video created by friend Ron Bailey showed various pictures of Wamsher with his friends.
Sgt. Larry Kraus, of the Florida Highway Patrol, said the cause of death still had not been determined, and that it could take at least a month before forensics tests come back to show which man was driving at the time of the crash. Tests are also pending to determine whether alcohol was involved.
The two men were exiting I-275 when the car veered into the grassy embankment and overturned. Neither was wearing his seat belt, according to the police report.
Wamsher had served on the Atlantic City Police Department for more than 10 years and was regularly on patrol in the city’s Inlet section from 4 p.m. to midnight, known as the Bravo shift.
