A woman police say was trying to care for a child in the back seat of her car when she caused a fatal head-on crash Sunday is charged with careless driving, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said Monday.
Prosecutor's Office spokesman Al Della Fave announced the charges, which include failure to maintain a lane of travel, against 28-year-old Kathleen Grasso, of Little Egg Harbor Township, who was driving north on North Green Street in Little Egg Harbor Township when the crash occurred just after 3 p.m.
Police said Michael Nuzzo, 81, of Toms River, was killed when the 2000 Honda Accord he was riding in, operated by his wife, Barbara, 74, collided head-on with Grasso's Honda Civic.
Grasso had veered out of her lane into oncoming traffic while caring for her 2-year-old son, who was sitting in an infant seat in the back seat, police said.
Grasso's 2-year-old son was injured and taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center, police said. Grasso suffered leg and head injuries and was airlifted to AtlantiCare's Regional Medical Center, City Campus, Atlantic City.
Michael Nuzzo died at the scene, and Barbara Nuzzo suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, in Atlantic City.
Della Fave said Sunday that Grasso showed no signs of being impaired immediately after the crash.
