New Jersey Congressmen, including Frank LoBiondo, R-2, requested federal funding for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to complete beach replenishment and flood protection projects.

In two letters to the President, congressmen cited damage from Hurricane Sandy and the impact on the 127 miles of New Jersey’s coastline.

“Our coastline sustained billions in damages that will take, in some cases, years to rebuild,” according to the letter signed by LoBiondo, Jon Runyan, Chris Smith, Frank Pallone, Rush Holt and Albio Sires.

The letter also states the coast is a major factor to tourism, the state’s second largest industry.

“Tourism is New Jersey’s second largest industry, and provides jobs for many of the 35 million people living within 100 miles of our beaches. There is no doubt that it will take years for our tourism industry to return to its pre-Sandy levels.”
