LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP — In response to recent after hour drowning incidents at area beaches so far this season, officials here are staffing a beach during evening hours for swimmers.
Tuesday, Mayor Joseph Mancini announced Long Beach Township Beach Patrol will have a lifeguard on duty until 8 p.m. daily at the 68th Street in the Brant Beach section of the township.
On June 10, Khitan Devine, a 10-year-old boy who disappeared while swimming off Atlantic City in the evening around 7 p.m. drowned and his body was later recovered in Margate. Devine was swimming with his younger sister and father when he got caught in a rip current. Lifeguards left the beach in Atlantic City at 6 p.m.
On June 20, two men went missing while swimming off the beaches in Seaside Park and Asbury Park and their bodies were recovered offshore from the towns the next day.
Lifeguards in Seaside Park had not started their season yet where the man was swimming and in Asbury Park lifeguards had finished their shift for the day when the other man drowned.
