A Hammonton woman and longtime swimming instructor at Hamilton Township’s George L. Hess Educational Complex has died after being injured in a crash in Galloway Township last month, police said.

Margaret Stringer, 52, was injured Feb. 15 in an accident at Cologne Avenue and Aloe Street.

Valerie Sye, 57, of Waterford Works, Camden County, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the driver’s side of Stringer’s car, forcing it off the the roadway and into a utility pole and stop sign, police said.

Stringer, who died Tuesday, four days after her 52nd birthday, was a graduate of Mainland Regional High School and West Chester University, and received a master’s degree from Temple University, according to her obituary. She had been a swimming teacher and physical education teacher at the Hess complex in Mays Landing since 1991.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Adams-Perfect Funeral Home in Northfield, with her funeral scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Shore Fellowship Church in Egg Harbor Township.

Sye was issued a summons for careless driving following the crash, police said.

Sgt. Donna Higbee said it was not determined yet whether any charges would be upgraded following Stringer’s death.
