A Lower Township man pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of killing two teenage girls while driving drunk.

Joshua Malmgren, 30, pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated manslaughter in Cape May County Superior Court, according to Ken Super, chief of county investigators for the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.

Malmgren is accused of driving drunk on Bayshore Road in Middle Township on July 31 and killing cousins Nioami Lazicki and Ashley Dauber.

Lazicki, 15, of Middle Township, and Dauber, 13, of Philadelphia, were walking that evening along the road about a half-mile from Lazicki's home when the Ford Bronco Malmgren was driving struck the two girls at about 9:15 p.m. near the Green Creek firehouse.

Lazicki's younger sister, Farrahanne, 14, was also walking with the girls but was able to get out of the way before the Ford Bronco ran off the road.

Malmgren was arrested at the scene. A grand jury indicted him in November.

The charges carry a penalty of between 10 and 30 years in state prison.

Malmgren is being held at Cape May County jail on $400,000 bail.
