The Vineland woman wounded in a machete attack two weeks ago and her alleged assailant who was eventually shot by police are still in critical condition, Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said.
Eugenio Morales, 43, who is accused of attacking an unidentified woman remains in Cooper University Hospital in Camden, according to Webb-McRae.
Authorities said earlier that the 41-year-old woman was also taken to Cooper. Webb-McRae would not identify the woman.
Webb-McRae said there are no new developments about the case that can be released to the public. The investigation into the attack on the woman and Morales’ shooting continues, she said.
Authorities alleged that Morales attacked the woman in her home with a machete on Aug. 15. The woman suffered life-threatening injures to her face, head, body and hands, they said. Authorities will not comment on a motive for the attack.
Morales allegedly fled after the attack. A wide-ranging searched ended two days later when Morales was spotted walking near Route 54 in in Buena Vista Township by Sgt. Stacy Steudle and Patrolman Eugene Soracco of the Buena Borough Police Department. Buena Borough police patrol a section of Route 54.
Authorities said at least one of the officers — who were told by a passerby that the man walking on along Route 54 matched the description of a suspect wanted in the attack on the woman — shot Morales after he attacked them with a box cutter.
Morales is charged with attempted homicide in connection with his alleged assault on the woman.
