WILDWOOD - A man who allegedly killed a woman and her mother inside the central Pennsylvania home they shared is in custody in New Jersey after he confessed to the killings, police said.
Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman said Monday that 22-year-old Gary Charles Gerlach was arrested at a Wildwood motel on Sunday morning, two days after the bodies of 22-year-old Makenzie Hess and her mother, Mona, were found at a home in Lancaster County.
Stedman said that Gerlach took a car belonging to one of the victims, and the car was found at the motel, leading police to Gerlach. He was arrested in his motel room.
A police affidavit says Gerlach confessed to the killings and shared specific details about the scene with detectives.
Stedman said Gerlach had been living in the family's Upper Leacock Township home, and he was in a relationship with Makenzie Hess.
Autopsies are being done today, Stedman said.
Gerlach was being held on a fugitive charge at the Cape May County jail in Middle Township.
