PLEASANTVILLE — Police tape and gun shell casings littered West Adams Avenue on Friday afternoon, as police investigated a shooting that hospitalized at least one man.

Shortly before 1 p.m., police responded to the 200 block of West Adams, where three shots went through a car and struck a man inside, acting Chief Jose Ruiz said.

Erin Chapman, 36, of Mays Landing,  was transported to an area hospital. His condition was not available.

The car — a white, four-door Acura — was parked on the street and had multiple bullet holes in its passenger-side door.

Elba Arqueado was in her yard across the street when the shooting occurred.

“I heard the gunshots, then I saw two cars speed away,” Arqueado said. “Then I saw that the man was shot and had to go to the hospital.”

Arqueado said the victim was a “neighbor’s boyfriend,” but that she did not know his name or anything else about him.

Herman Aponte also lives across the street from where the shooting took place.

“I heard the shots, about three or four of them, and that was it,” Aponte said. “I didn’t know until I got outside that the man was shot.”

The crime scene attracted a small crowd of spectators, all of whom declined to comment.

“I’ve heard gunshots in this neighborhood before, but nothing like this,” Arqueado said. “This was very scary … very scary.”
