DENNIS TOWNSHIP - A boater was rescued from a remote marshy area late Thursday night after his concerned wife called N.J. State Police to report he was missing.

Craig Weidel, 65, of Cape May Court House, left for a day trip on his 15-foot sailboat at around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. By late evening his wife had not heard from him or seen him and called state police to report him missing.

Troopers in Woodbine, along with the aviation and marine units, responded to the area of East Creek Lake on state highway 347 and found Weidel's vehicle and tow at around 7:45 p.m., police said.

The aviation unit located Weidel in a remote marshy area and was able to notify troopers on land. Two officers, James Laspada and Sgt. Robert Frake took a boat that could maneuver shallow waters and rescued Weidel, returning to shore by 11:30 p.m.

Police said he was dehydrated and had numerous bug bites but was in good condition and refused further medical attention.

"Too many times you hear about boaters missing, it's nice to hear about (a search and rescue) that ends successfully," said state police spokesman Sgt. Adam Grossman.
