BRIDGETON – The man who authorities allege fatally shot a Commercial Township resident during a domestic dispute last month was arraigned in Superior Court on Friday.

Errick Young, 20, of Millville, stood shackled and still in his orange Cumberland County jail jumpsuit during the 5-minute proceeding here.

Young said little other than to acknowledge that he understood his rights and that he was seeking an attorney to defend him from charges that he shot 29-year-old Benjamin Broughton on March 22.

Across the third-floor courtroom sat Broughton’s mother, Annie. The 52-year-old local resident’s hands shook and she swayed silently from side to side during the proceedings. She and other Broughton family members quickly left the courtroom when the proceedings ended.

Young is charged with murder, aggravated assault and various weapons offenses.

Young is being held in the Cumberland County jail on $1 million bail. Superior Court Judge Robert Malestein said Friday he would let the bail figure stand pending the results of any future bail hearings.

State Police said they found Broughton lying on the front yard of his home on Main Street in the Port Norris section of Commercial Township on March 22. Broughton was shot in one eye, and was eventually pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m. at Inspira Medical Center Vineland, they said.

State Police and Broughton family members and friends said the shooting stemmed from an apparent domestic dispute involving Benjamin Broughton’s girlfriend, Sharee Goines, and Porschea Young and Errick Young.

Broughton’s mother said Porschea Young is the mother of two of her son’s children. The Youngs are cousins, she said.

Young was finally arrested in Clementon, Camden County, apartment on Tuesday by State Police and members of the U.S. Marshal’s Task Force. State Police said they caught Young as he tried to escape through a second-floor window.
