A Millville man has been indicted in the shooting death of an Atlantic County man in January 2012, officials with the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office disclosed Monday.

Authorities allege that Jayson A. Vasquez shot and killed 21-year-old Buena resident Michael Valero as Valero sat in a car in the Delsea Village apartment complex parking lot in Millville on Jan. 31.

A Cumberland County grand jury sitting in the county courthouse in Bridgeton last week indicted Vasquez on charges of murder, aggravated assault, hindering prosecution and weapons offenses, according to an indictment list released by the Prosecutor's Office. Vasquez, 24, of the 2200 block of South 2nd Street, is in the Cumberland County jail, where he was taken after his arrest a year ago on $500,000 bail, county officials said.

Authorities will not comment on what prompted the shooting.

Valero family members said after the incident that Valero went to Delsea Village on South Second Street after Vasquez made repeated requests for a meeting there. They said they did not know why Vasquez wanted to meet with Valero, and knew of no problems between the two men.

Millville police said they went to Delsea Village after callers reported hearing gunshots at the apartment complex at around 8 p.m. Valero was in a car with a gunshot wound to the chest, they said. Members of the Millville Rescue Squad tried unsuccessfully to save Valero's life at the scene, they said.

Authorities eventually began searching for Vasquez, who they said in a notice to the community was "armed and dangerous and should not be approached." Vasquez eventually surrendered to authorities on Feb. 2, 2012.

According to members of Valero's family, the deceased had returned to the Millville area about two weeks earlier from Boise, Idaho. Valero had a family member stationed with the U.S. military in Boise, and he moved there to be closer to that family member, they said.
