The impact of the state’s ticket price law on the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association can be clearly seen in the declining revenue produced by the state individual wrestling tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
The event used to be one of the organization’s major revenue sources. The NJSIAA charged $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens before the law was instituted in 2010. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens this year.
The NJSIAA still makes money at Boardwalk Hall, but profits are down. The NJSIAA made $210,937 in 2009 but just $129,513 last year.
The NJSIAA used Boardwalk Hall profits to cover expenses for the team wrestling tournament and the individual district and region championships.
Less money at Boardwalk Hall means less money to cover expenses. The overall team and individual wrestling tournaments made $243,943 in 2008. That number dropped to $14,010 in 2010 — the first year of the new ticket law. The wrestling tournaments lost $5,693 last year.
Now, the event doesn’t even cover the expenses for the team or the district and region wrestling tournaments.
That might not seem like much money to lose, but the NJSIAA uses revenue from high-profile sports such as wrestling, football and basketball to cover expenses of other such sports such as fencing and gymnastics.
